v36 v37 7 7 8 8 == Project Objective 9 Backscatter radio, or reflection radio, offers a low-cost and low-power alternative to conventional radio sensor networks. This is crucial for modern agriculture which requires continual monitoring of environmental conditions such as soil moisture or temperature. Prior research using capacitance sensors to measure soil moisture has shown promising results using backscatter radio, despite the limited range.9 Modern agriculture requires wireless sensing networks to monitor environmental conditions such as temperature and soil moisture. However, traditional sensing networks are expensive and energy-intensive. Backscatter radio, or reflection radio, offers a low-cost and low-power alternative to conventional radio sensor networks (1). Despite the limited range, prior research using capacitance sensors to measure soil moisture has shown promising results (2). 10 10 11 Our group expanded this work to use temperature sensors o n a plants which will transmit information using a network of RFID (radio frequency identification) tags. These sensors should be battery-less and low-cost as they willharvest ambient radio frequency (RF) energy.11 Our group expanded this work to use temperature sensors or thermistors on plants which transmit information using backscatter techniques. These sensors will be battery-less and low-cost as they harvest ambient radio frequency (RF) energy. 12 12 13 13 Over the summer, our team split into two groups to build the transmitter and receiver, ultimately converging. … … 81 81 82 82 ==== WEEK NINE ==== 83 Digital sensors time 83 [https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1LHRwIVJcsXC6uEPopnxCzAwehbN2e5Lufwh47mqo_go/edit?usp=sharing Weekly Presentation]\\ 84 //Progress: // 85 86 87 Digital sensors time 88 89 90 This week, we received basic controls for the plant chamber such as a temperature controller, LED grow lights, and humidity sensors. We still need to determine a method to control the humidity such as using a dehumidifier & humidifier or a saturated salt solution. Without these humidity controls, the excessive humidity within the ORBIT room led to growth of harmless fungi in the plant's soil. 91 [[Image(Plant Chamber.png, 350px, align=center)]] 92 93 ==== WEEK TEN ==== 94 [https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1hLqbTcdPJTugqhbaQiwvGx0-oBIqWJHn1wkJphVwx0E/edit?usp=sharing Final Presentation] 95 //Progress: // 96 97 98 84 99 == References == 85 100 (1) A.
